A one-and-a-half-year-old baby girl today fell on the railway tracks and died on the spot due to the injuries sustained after slipping from her mother's arms while they were de-boarding a train, the GRP said.

The toddler slipped through the gap between the platform and the moving train after her mother tripped while getting off at Mambalam railway station here, a senior Government Railway Police (GRP) official said.

The woman sustained serious injuries in her legs, he added.

"Lakshmi tripped as the train started moving while she was getting off the Mannai Express from Mannargudi," the official told PTI, adding that the woman has been hospitalised.

The woman, along with her husband and other family members, had returned to the city by Mannai Express after a sojourn at their native place in Thanjavur district.
