Toilets in schools: HC orders Edu Dept to file report

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High court today directed Tamil Nadu Government's School Education Department to file a report on the action intiated by the officials for providing toilet facilities in all the schools and repairing the dysfunctional toilets with in one month.

The report should mention about the time needed for providing toilet facilities in all the schools or repairing the facilities.

Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice V Dhanapal in an interim direction on a PIL filed by one C Anantharaj said the officials should ensure toilet faicilities for all the school aided by Government aided schools and Government schools.
 

They should also deploy adequate number of staff for the maintenance of the toilets and there should be seperate toilets for boys and Girls. The Government should also publish the status of toilet facilities in the schools in its website as on October 31 this year.

The petitoner said Tamil Nadu government had allocated Rs 17000 crore for the education. But the fate of the schools is bad especially with regard to provision of toilets. He said 4375 schools did not have toilets and toilets in 1159 schools were not functional.

The students of the schools where there was no toilet facility were getting infected as they attended to nature's call in the open area, the petitioner said.
