Tomar arrest: CPI(M) demands Jung's resignation

Terming Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar's arrest as a "shocking" instance of "arbitrary" exercise of power by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, CPI(M) today demanded Jung's resignation "immediately".

"The arrest of Tomar is a shocking instance of arbitrary exercise of power by Lt Governor. The Delhi Police is under the jurisdiction of the Lt Governor. The arrest has been effected when the matter of an alleged false degree acquired by the Minister is before the court.

"The Lt Governor has by a series of actions showed that he will not abide by democratic and federal norms. He should quit office immediately," CPI (M) said in a statement.
 

Condemning Tomar's arrest earlier in the day, the communist party also accused Centre of using Jung to ride roughshod over elected state government of Delhi.

Tomar, who claims to have a law degree from a University in Bihar which his rivals have alleged is fake, was arrested from his house was taken to Vasant Vihar police station for questioning.

He has been accused of cheating, forgery, forgery with purpose of cheating and criminal conspiracy under various sections of IPC.
