Top officials of Madhya Pradesh government today apologised to Kerala Chief Minister P Vijayan for the "inconvenience" caused to him due to the protest at the venue of a programme where he was supposed to participate.

"Both I and Chief Secretary B P Singh personally met the Kerala Chief Minister and apologised for the inconvenience caused to him," Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Rishi Kumar Shukla told PTI.

The DGP said police only requested him to delay the visit but he decided to return.

DIG, Bhopal, Raman Singh Sikarwar and Collector Nishant Warwade also apologised to Vijayan on the issue.

Though Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also spoke to Vijayan over the issue, what transpired between them is not known.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat had claimed that the Madhya Pradesh Police advised Vijayan not to attend a felicitation programme as RSS and other organisations were opposing it and they were not in a "position" to provide security to him.

Following the protest, the programme was cancelled and the Kerala Chief Minister went back.
