Police has registered a case of credit card fraud after a top official of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was cheated to the tune of Rs 2.41 lakh by unidentified persons who lured him into sharing his card details for earning reward points on bill payments.
A case under Section 420 of IPC was registered at IP Estate police station in central Delhi on the complaint of fraud by the Registrar (Law) of NHRC C K Chaturvedi last night. Investigation is underway and no arrests have been made so far, said a senior police officer.
Chaturvedi, ex-district judge in Delhi, had received a call on his mobile phone on July 19. The caller who introduced himself as an SBI officer told him about his accumulated reward points on use of his SBI credit card, police said.
The caller told Chaturvedi that he could set off his reward points for future bill payments, that will otherwise go waste as they were to be used in a fixed time period.
Believing the caller the complainant shared his credit card details. Later, on August 10 when he got his bank statement, he found six unauthorised trasactions, from July 20-25, to the tune of Rs 2.41 lakh.
Sensing fraud, he approached his bank to find out how he could not receive any messages on his mobile phone regarding the transaction. The bank customer care personnel told him that his registered mobile number that he was using was changed with them which was why he failed to receive any transaction alerts.
Police is checking through the details of the unauthorised transactions and trying to identify the accused through the mobile number which was used to call the complainant.
