The impact of the tornado was maximum in Bishalgarh subdivision area of Sipahijala district where more than 1000 houses collapsed and at least 200 people were injured when the tornado swept through the area yesterday, they said.
The tornado lasted for about 10 minutes, but left a trail of destruction.
The injured were admitted to Bishalgarh hospital and Agartala Government Medical College here.
A 60-year-old cultivator was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire uprooted by the storm at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, about 195 km from here.
The government has opened three relief camps in Bishalgarh sub-division and security forces and civil defence volunteers were engaged in rescue works. PTI JOY MM DV
