Tourist footfall, both foreign and domestic, in Assam is in excess of 51 lakh at present and the sector is generating a substantial amount of revenue for the state, a senior official said today.

"Assam is witnessing a rise in tourist footfall both domestic and foreign as the state is gearing up to promote the tourism sector in a planned way," Secretary Tourism with the Assam government Dhruva Hazarika said here today.

The state government had identified several forms of tourism like wildlife tourism, religious tourism, historical and cultural tourism, tea tourism and river tourism, he said during a media meet at the Travel and Tourism Fair.

Hazarika said Assam was also home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, with the population count as per the latest census at 143.

The official said the tourism sector was generating a substantial amount of revenue for the state.

Blessed by the existence of several national parks, the mighty Brahmaputra river, numerous tea gardens and the famous Kamakhya shrine, the state also has 26 golf courses.
