Amidst an increase in the number of people suffering injuries due to China-made kite strings, the Batala police today arrested a Ludhiana-based trader and seized 1,320 rolls of the banned rope from him.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by assistant sub-inspector Mohinder Pal laid a "naka" at Qadian Chungi and seized the banned strings, Civil Lines police station SHO Gurpinder Singh said.

The trader was identified as Ashwani Kumar, a resident of Gulshasn Gali near Division No. 3 police station in Ludhiana, and he had come to the city to sell the strings to the shopkeepers here, the SHO said.

Last year, two children were killed and over a dozen residents were seriously injured due to this "killer" string.

The kite string, commonly known as "China string" are chemically coated, making it very sharp compared to the traditional strings. Moreover, the colours used in the strings make the strings not easily visible to the human eye, which make it more dangerous, the SHO added.
