Assistant sub-inspector Amritlal Bhilala (58), who died after being hit and dragged by a car while on traffic duty in Bhopal, was today cremated at his native village in Raigarh district.

The cremation took place at Pachore near here with full state honours, as his son Amar lit the funeral pyre.

Bhilla was on vehicle-checking duty in Bhopal's Nishantpura on June 16.

When he tried to stop a speeding car, it hit him and dragged him on for nearly 500 metres. A grievously injured policeman died in a hospital in the state capital yesterday.

Before being taken to his village, the body was kept in the Police Lines in Nehru Nagar, Bhopal, today, where Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Director General of Police R K Shukla paid their respects.

Chouhan announced a Rs one crore ex-gratia aid to the official's family. Bhilala would be accorded the "martyr status", he said.

Chouhan also tweeted that Bhilala's statue would be installed after consulting his family, and his son or daughter would get a government job.

Police have already given a financial help of Rs 5 lakh to the family from Police Welfare Fund.

Bhilala's wife would get "extraordinary pension", that is, full salary until his retirement date, Inspector General of Police Jaideep Prasad told PTI.

Three occupants of the car which hit and dragged Bhilala were arrested after the incident. A murder charge was pressed against them following his death, police said.
