An audio clip, in which a traffic police inspector is purportedly heard demanding Rs 2,000 from someone to pay Internet bill of his office, has gone viral on social media, following which the official has been removed from his post.
Police said the audio clip is two-year-old and they suspect that it was made public to settle some scores with the traffic inspector.
The government regularly pays Internet bills of its offices, police said.
In the audio, which went viral on social media, Pinderjit Singh Riar could be heard demanding over phone the money from a local businessman.
"I will not ask you next time," he is heard telling the person.
"Riar has been removed from the traffic wing of the police and has been sent to police lines. We will also write to the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) to take disciplinary action against the Inspector," Jalandhar Police Commissioner P K Sinha said today.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Harwinder Singh said the receiver of the telephone call was identified as Manjeet Singh, local businessman.
Notably, in March, state finance minister Manpreet Badal had caught two policemen taking bribe when he was returning in a private car without the red beacon or any escort from Ferozepur after attending a function.
