Mumbai traffic police are allowing offenders not carrying currency notes of lower denominations some time to pay the fine as Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes have been withdrawn by the government.

"Our personnel are issuing challan to the defaulters but are not insisting on immediate payment from those carrying Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 rupee notes. We are giving them time to pay later," a traffic police official told PTI.

The defaulters were being asked to deposit their driving licences with the police which could be collected upon payment of the fine, he added.
