Vehicular movement around the famous Lord Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram is banned during festival seasons to ensure security based on inputs from Police and Central intelligence agencies, Tamil Nadu Government said today.
Responding to concerns raised by a member about the regulations affecting people, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department R Kamaraj told the Assembly that measures regulating, prohibiting movement of vehicles around the ancient temple was not a permanent feature.
"It is done on a need basis especially during festivals like Aadi Amavasya after taking into account several aspects including inputs of police and Central intelligence," he said adding the temple was located in an island and factors like threat from terrorists had to be considered.
