Train attendant arrested for theft of silver ornaments

The train attendant, Abhaya Mohanty of Gopinathpur village, working as a bed roller in the Okha-Puri Express, had allegedly stolen ornaments in the running train from a passenger R P Gupta on August 16, IIC of Sadar police station Sushil Kumar Mishra said.

Gupta had boarded the train at Rajkot in Gujarat with jewellery and was to get down at Berhampur in Odisha.

At Rajmundry station in Andhra Pradesh, he found the bag containing ornaments was missing and lodged a complaint with the Railway police at Rajmundry, he said.

While inquiring into the theft, the Railway police learnt that the train attendant had not been coming for duty since then.

 

A police team led by Inspector Railway Police K Venkateswar Rao of Rajmundry, with the help of local police, raided Mohanty's house and arrested him and recovered the silver jewellery weighing 9.2 kg of the 15 kg stolen from the trader, Mishra said.

Mohanty was produced in a court and taken on transit remand to Rajmundry by the Andhra Pradesh police.
