A possible train mishap was averted as an alert driver stopped the train as it was approaching damaged rails after spotting red flag on the tracks near Cuttack today, a railway official said.
Nobody was hurt as the driver of the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train from Cuttack to Berhampur saw the red flag and halted the train, an East Coast Railway (ECoR) official said.
The train was allowed to pass the site at slow speed after about 40 minutes and train traffic is now normal on the busy route, the official said.
A work for construction of foot over bridge was under progress at Gopalpur-Balikuda this afternoon. After the work was over, the road crane was removed and it was returning to Cuttack, an ECoR statement said.
It was then found that the road crane had damaged a few sleepers and some rails on the track and red flag was put at the site immediately, it said.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Khurda Road, Brijmohan Agarwal has constituted a four-member committee to enquire into the matter. The committee would submit a detailed report in 48 hours, it added.
