Train mows down elephant in Assam

A speeding train today mowed down a wild elephant while it was trying to cross a railway track in north Lakhimpur district of Assam, a forest official said.

A herd of elephants from the nearby Dulung reserve forest was crossing the railway track at Pathalipam area, when the train hit the jumbo, killing it on the spot.

Veterinarians have reached the accident site, located behind the reserve forest, for carrying out postmortem, the official said.
