Railways today replaced about 500 metres of damaged tracks between Pukhrayan and Malasa stations in the Jhansi-Kanpur section to make the route affected by the train derailment operational with a speed restriction.

"The route will be operational by 9 PM today as the affected coaches and the damaged tracks have been removed from the site," said a senior Railway Ministry official involved in the line restoration work.

Railways has cancelled 29 mail/express trains and cancelled 11 services after the derailment of Patna-Indore Express yesterday that claimed more than 140 lives.

He said about 500 metres of new rails replaced the existing damaged tracks in the section, paving the way for the resumption of train operations.

Besides replacing rails, electrical works were completed to ensure train operation on the busy route.

Trains would be allowed to run at 10 kmph speed. There would be speed restriction on the affected route for sometime before normalcy is restored, he added.
