The body of a villager, who was trampled to death by a wild elephant two days ago, was today recovered from Bamandih village under Ichagarh police station of Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said.

The incident occurred when a herd of wild elephants entered the village and local people including Khagendra Mahato (52) tried to drive the animals out.

Mahato, however, was not found since then.

The villagers were aware that Mahato might have been killed by the elephants but did not dare to go and search for him out of fear of the pachyderms.

On being informed of the incident, a police team along with forest department officials went to the spot today and recovered the body, which was sent for post-mortem examination, police said.

The forest department handed over Rs 25,000 as immediate relief to the victim's family members and assured them to provide other benefits as per rules later.
