Transgenders recruited as Home Guards in Madurai

In what is claimed to be the first such recruitment in Tamil Nadu, six transgenders have been recruited as Home Guards in Madurai district.

Superintendent of Police Balakrishnan today said six transgenders had given their application and it had been decided to recruit them in the Home Guards wing as home guards after a physical fitness test.

They would be given uniforms and deployed in crime prevention activities in crowded places, he said, claiming that it was the first recruitment of transgenders as home guards in the state.

Talking to reporters, Bharathi Kannamma and other transgenders thanked the SP for deciding to recruit them as Home Guards.They said they were prepared to work round-the-clock and claimed they were capable of working on par with the men and women home guards.
