Transport sector gets lion's share of Delhi budget

Delhi government today gave lion's share of the 2013-14 budget to the transport sector, allocating Rs 3,876 crore for various projects, including purchase of 1,725 low-floor and semi low-floor buses.

The government proposed 8,000 new permits for autorickshaws for corporate sector to set up radio autorickshaw service, on the lines of radio taxi.

The corporates would set up a call centre to provide autorickshaws on demand. A single entity would get a maximum of 500 permits and provided with distinct colour strip for easy identification.

"Out of the 16 corporates proposed to be allocated these 8,000 new autorickshaw permits, two corporates will employ only women autorickshaw drivers and they would be provided 1,000 permits," said Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Diskhit while presenting the 2013-14 budget today.
 

The budget also announced an expenditure of more than Rs 1,500 crore on improvement and maintenance work of the roads taken over by the government from the municipal corporation last year.
