Workers in transport sector here owing allegiance to different trade unions and owners of transport and goods vehicles in Puducherry would join the nation wide strike on April 30 to protest against the new Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014.
General Secretary of the Puduchery unit of AITUC V S Abishegam told PTI that a joint meeting of representatives of transport owners and trade unions was held here today and took the decision.
He said that the provisions in the new bill would inflict massive punishment and imposition of hefty fines. He said that the 'hidden agenda of the new bill is to pave the way for privatisation of both the passenger and goods transports in the country.
This would be a serious threat to job security of workers in the transport sector and hence the unions cutting across party lines have decided to observe a day long strike on April 30 in response to the call given by various federations of workers, he said.
