Slamming the government for "poor quality of patient care in its hospitals, senior BJP leader V K Malhotra held Health Minister A K Walia "responsible" for the "tragic incident" and demanded his resignation.

He also demanded a probe by a retired Supreme Court judge.

Four patients had died at the ICU of Sushruta Trauma Centre in North Delhi on Tuesday last following snapping of oxygen supply. The Delhi government has already dismissed two doctors, suspended one and transferred another holding them responsible for the incident.

"The Health Minister is directly responsible for the incident. It is a very serious issue. The government has removed one-two junior people which is not enough. Walia must resign," Malhotra, who is Leader of Opposition, said.

Malhotra has also demanded tabling of the report of the inquiry committee on whose recommendation government had taken punitive action against the four doctors of the hospital.

The BJP criticised the government for outsourcing various services to private entities and said the patients had died as inexperienced people were handling the oxygen supply system.

"A person who studied till Class IX was looking after the system. Even matriculation is must for giving license to drive auto-rickshaw. The condition of health delivery service is really in a bad shape," Malhotra said, amid shouting by a number of Congress legislators. (More)
