A travel agent near here has been booked for allegedly duping a villager of Rs 16 lakh saying he would send him to Canada, police said.
Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Dudala village in district Nawanshahr, had lodged a complaint against the travel agent in this regard, police said.
The complainant said that he came in contact with the travel agent in latter's office in local Chadha market on April 21 this year, police said.
He said that the agent had demanded Rs 21 lakh for sending him to Canada.
The complainant gave Rs 16 lakh to the agent who later gave him necessary documents and a ticket, telling him that his flight was slated for September 17 this year, police said.
He told police that when he was on his way to New Delhi to catch the flight to Canada, the agent rang him up and told him that his flight stood cancelled.
On return to Punjab, the complainant came to know that he had been defrauded as the documents and the ticket were fake.
He reported the matter to police which booked the agent under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC.
The agent was absconding, police said.
