Travel and tourism sector has huge potential to create thousands of jobs and push the economic growth of the country, a top government official today said.

"India needs to focus on travel and tourism. It has the best multiplier effect as far as job creation is concerned. and therefore, it (government) needs to focus on travel and tourism with huge vigor and energy," Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Amitabh Kant said.

He was addressing the eleventh hotel investment conference-South Asia 2015 here.

"There is huge potential in terms of growth. Currently, it contributes about 6.8 per cent in the GDP but has the potential to (increase the share to) almost 9 per cent of the GDP," he said.

"Indian politicians must realise that it is not an elitist activity. It is an activity which is a job creator and it is an activity which will generate India's growth," he added.

On boosting manufacturing sector growth, the secretary said that there are some legacy issues in the labour laws which needs urgent attention of the government.

"India has the worst labour laws of the world and actually there is a study which shows that only Pakistan's labour law is the worst labour law than India and therefore it needs to set back right," he said.

Further he added that India needs to bypass the brick and mortar setup all together by using technology and e-commerce platforms.
