Tribal attacked by tiger while cutting firewood

A 40-year-old tribal was attacked by a tiger today when he was cutting firewood, forest department sources said.

Madhan and his brother Masanan, residents of Kurumbarpadi tribal village, had gone to fetch firewood from the forest area on Sincara-Masanagudi Road, about 40 Kms from here, when a tiger pounced on them from behind.

As both were running for lives, the animal attacked Madhan, injuring his leg and thigh,

However, luck favoured the duo when a jeep came that way and the tiger backed out to the jungle hearing the voice raised by the vehicle's honking and the passengers, they said.
 

Madhan, after first aid in Masanagudi hospital, was taken to the government hospital in Gudalur where was recovering, they said.

Meanwhile, panic gripped in Thaimudi estate in Valparai in Coimbatore district when a three-year old calf of a cow was killed by a leopard last evening, police said.

Steps were being taken to trap the leopard, the sources said.
