A tribal elder today escaped a bid on his life when a roadside bomb went off in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

The roadside bombing targeted Malik Abdul Hakeem when he was travelling in a vehicle through Bajaur agency.

The remote controlled bomb exploded close to the vehicle and the tribal elder escaped unhurt.

Security forces immediately rushed to the blast site and started a search operation after cordoning off the area.

Attacks on tribal elders are frequent in the restive northwest tribal region.

In May, an influential pro-government tribal elder, Malik Qader Khan, and his two guards were killed in an attack near Miranshah.

At least nine persons, including three suspected militants and three children, were killed in a bomb blast targeting the house of a tribal elder in January.
