A 20-year-old tribal woman was allegedly raped by a Nepalese national on the pretext of getting married to her in this district of Maharashtra.

Senior Inspector D P Bhoye of Mokhada police station said the accused Ramesh Thapa (24), who worked at a food stall, befriended the woman.

Promising to marry her, he took her to Wada, where he rented a room and repeatedly raped her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a boy, but the child soon died.

In December 2015 he took her to Nepal, assuring her that they would get married in his home country, but did not keep his word and left her.

Meanwhile, her relatives had filed a missing person complaint at Mokhada.

The victim, left alone at a lodge in Kathmandu, contacted the Nepal police, who informed the Mokhada police about her whereabouts. A police team was sent to Nepal which brought her back.

Upon her return last week, a case was registered against Thapa for rape and other offences.

A search is on for the accused.
