Tributes were paid in Kalinga Nagar industrial area in Odisha's Jajpur district today to those who lost their lives in police firing during a demonstration eight years ago.

While a Sradhanjali Sabha was organised by Bistapita Parivar Unnayan Parishad (BPUP) at Gobarghati Rehabilitation Colony, another group belonging to Vistapan Virodhi Jan Manch (VVJM) assembled at Ambagadia, where the firing incident had taken place on this day in 2006.

"Separate meetings held by both the groups passed off peacefully today," said Deepak Kumar, Superintendent of police, Jajpur.

A large number of people from the Tata Parivar colonies attended the Sradhanjali meeting organised by BPUP where Tulsi Munda joined as the Chief Guest.

Social activist Tulsi Munda said all should unite for the development of Odisha and Jajpur district as the meeting paid floral tributes to 14 people who lost their lives. The members from the deceased families were felicitated on the occasion. Senior citizens were provided with blankets.

On the other hand, VVJM leaders pledged to continue the fight against forcible displacement.

Police personnel in strength and two magistrates were deployed to prevent any untoward incident and the functions passed off peacefully.
