Tributes to Periyar on his birth anniversary

Floral tributes were paid to rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy on his 137th birth anniversary by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, DMK chief Karunanidhi and a host of other leaders of various political parties.

Jayalalithaa, DMK chief Karunanidhi, his son and party treasurer M K Stalin paid floral tributes at a portrait of Periyar E V Ramasamy here.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet said, "my tribute to the great social reformer Thanthai Periyar on his birth anniversary."

PMK leaders Ramadoss, Anbumani Ramadoss, MDMK chief Vaiko also paid respects to the rationalist leader.

Periyar (1879-1973), was a rationalist leader and fountain of Dravidian ideology who led Dravidian Movement in Tamil Nadu championing the cause of subaltern classes.
