A local leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress was shot dead at Nakashipara in Nadia district, the police said today.

Ashraful Seikh (42), member of Nakashipara panchayat samiti, was sitting at a tea stall near Haranagar Bada Masjid last night when three people came in a motorbike and sprayed bullets killing him on the spot, district SP Sabyasachi Raman Mishra said.

The victim's father Nizamuddin Seikh lodged a complaint with the police against six persons and one was arrested, the SP said.

TMC Nadia district president Gauri Dutta alleged that CPI(M) and BJP were behind the murder.

The two parties, however, denied the charge saying it was a fall out of the internal feud of the TMC.

The body was sent for autopsy.
