The statement of a Trinamool Congress MLA from Burdwan regarding his partymen indulging in "extortion" caused a flutter, though the TMC Burdwan district president said he has received no complaints in this regard.

The MLA Tapan Chatterjee's statement, which went viral on TV channels, said, "Money was raised in the name of All India Trinamool Congress but there was no mention (in the receipt) of the name of the secretary or the person who is taking the money (on behalf of the party). Only the amount of Rs 5,000 is mentioned".

"I have given it (the receipt) to the party leaders and said that this extortion has to be stopped", he said adding, "These people have not come to do (good) to TMC. They have come to harm the party," said the statement of the MLA from Purbasthali Uttar constituency.

TMC Burdwan district president Swapan Debnath, however, said he has received no complaints in this regard.

"If such complaints are received, we will investigate and verify the truth," Debnath, also a minister in the TMC government, said.
