Sweekar Luthra alias Sonu Rajput alias Sonu alias Mahesh, a 35-year-old resident of Karnal in Haryana and also from UP's Bulandshehar district, along with his aides Ankit Chaturvedi (22) of Farukkhabad and Darshan Kumar (40) of Uttam Nagar were arrested from Sarai Kale Khan interstate bus terminus.
The trio were arrested on November 22, a senior police official said.
Six packets containing 5,000 counterfeit coins of Rs 5 denomination, having face value of Rs 1.5 lakh, were recovered from the car in which they had come to deliver the coins, the official said.
Police had received information that fake coins of Rs 5 and Rs 10 denomination were being circulated as they were in heavy demand.
"During interrogation, Luthra revealed that he was the kingpin of the gang and was involved in minting and distribution of fake coins in different states and cities. Luthra also said that illicit money earned was used to fund construction of flats," DCP Crime branch S B S Tyagi said.
The trio also revealed that they used to get their consignment from Madhubani in Bihar through Railways, he said, adding that efforts are on to nab three others in the case.
