Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan today appealed to "dharmacharyas" (heads) of all religions to view the verdict of the Supreme Court on triple talaq as a move towards delivering justice to women.

The apex court today banned the 1,400 year-old practice of instant 'triple talaq' among Sunni Muslims and set it aside on several grounds including that it was against the basic tenets of the Holy Quran and violated the Islamic law Shariat.

"The court has delivered an important judgement on triple talaq. I request all dharmacharyas to view this verdict as an important step towards delivering justice to women," Mahajan told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting.

The Speaker said she was very happy as a woman with the judgement of the apex court.

"When a woman is divorced in such a manner by her husband and is driven out of home, it becomes very difficult for her to face such a situation," Mahajan said, adding that throwing a woman out of her house was a kind of atrocity.

"There should be a uniform law for delivering justice to women in the country. I am talking only about women. The law should ensure that no injustice is done to women," she said.
