Tripura Human Rights Commission would start functioning from January 1 next year and the former Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh, Kalyanjyoti Sengupta would be appointed as the first chairman of the commission, a minister said today.

"Government has made official notification regarding formation of the human rights commission. Kalyanjyoti Sengupta, former Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court would be the first Chairman of the commission," State Law Minister, Tapan Chakraborty said.

A three-member committee headed by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar decided to appoint Sengupta as Chairman and the two other members would be R P Meena, former Principal Secretary and Samiraan Das, former Law Scretary.

Chakraborty said, Supreme Court had directed nine states including Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and seven north eastern states to set up human rights commission by January, 2016 and Tripura formed the commission before the time frame.

He said, the process of formation was little lengthy as a former high court justice or a former Supreme Court justice is required to be the chairman of the commission.
