"The Central government's proposal is unacceptable because the money for subsidy could be used by the consumers in different purpose. Moreover, the union government did not consult the state governments before giving such proposals," State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Manik Dey said.
"We also did not accept Centre's proposal that 25 per cent people in the rural areas and 50 per cent people in the urban pockets would not get the benefits of Public Distribution System," Dey told reporters.
He was briefing reporters on the just concluded meeting of food ministers held in Delhi, where Union Minister for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia were present.
Dey said the Centre was planning to implement its proposals in the Union Territories on experimental basis on the plea that the new system would strengthen the Public Distribution System.
