Tripura to continue provide rice to BPL people at Rs 2/kg

Tripura government would continue to distribute rice at a cost of Rs 2/kg to the people living under below poverty line (BPL), an official said today.

"The state government would implement the Central Food Security Act from April next. As per this act, the BPL category people are supposed to get rice at the rate of Rs 3 per kg, but the state government has decided to distribute the rice to the BPL category people at Rs 2 per kg with the state paying Rs one as subsidy", Principal Secretary (food and civil supplies) S K Rakesh told reporters.

The state government is distributing rice at a cost of Rs 2 to the BPL category people since 2013.
 

Rakesh said all the ration cards were being digitized and the entire rationing system was being computerized.

"The state has 9,60,000 ration cards of which 9,10,000 cards have already been digitized," he said adding the National Food Security Act (NFSA) would be implemented in Tripura from April 1, this year.
