Tropical Storm Danny was expected to gain strength and become the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, US forecasters have said.
Danny -- which was located about 1,600 miles (2,575 kilometers) east of the Windward Islands at 2100 GMT -- was expected to become a hurricane by tomorrow, the US-based National Hurricane Center said.
According to projections by the Miami-based forecasters, the system was moving west at 12 miles an hour with top sustained winds of 40 miles an hour.
Experts said earlier this month that there was a 90 per cent chance the 2015 hurricane season in the Atlantic, which runs through November 1, would be less active than normal.
This may be due to the strong El Nino weather pattern in place.
"El Nino" refers to the abnormal warming of surface waters in the equatorial Pacific every three to five years.
The last El Nino, five years ago, had a major impact: it triggered monsoons in Southeast Asia, droughts in southern Australia, the Philippines and Ecuador, blizzards in the United States, heatwaves in Brazil and killer floods in Mexico.
