Trump's support for gun control measure could spark backlash

President Donald Trump could face a backlash from gun rights advocates who fear he's strayed from his pledge to be a champion for the Second Amendment by voicing support for gun control measures in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Florida.

Gun owners voted for Trump in droves during the 2016 election and have been a rock-solid part of his political base. They expected Trump to aggressively push their agenda.

But Trump has defied them in recent days as pressure to curb gun violence mounts. For example, he's declared that assault rifles should be kept out of the hands of anyone under 21.

Tony Fabian, president of the Colorado Sports Shooting Association, says "there is a great feeling of betrayal and abandonment" among gun owners.
