Local Port officer Anbarasu said the tug which was towing a private ship, being built for Indian Navy, remained aground till today as the services of powerful-engine fitted tugs to retrieve it were not available.

The private ship, which also ran aground, drifted and collided with the 121st pier of the famous Pamban train bridge, damaging it and affecting the rail traffic.

The ship was brought to Rameswaram harbour ten days ago.

The tug and the ship were enroute to Mumbai from Karnataka when they ran aground at Pamban coast, close to Pamban bridge.

Both the new private ship,to be taken on contract by Navy, and the Tug boat had been now berthed in Rameswaram Harbour for official clearance, officials said.

After an inquiry and talks regarding the compensation for the railways, the ships would be released, the officials said.
