Speaking on the occasion of the National Press Day, he said, "In a multi-ethnic society like ours - burdened by political, economical and social manoeuvres, it often gets difficult for the media to play its role as it should.
"As a journalist one had to stand up for the cause of a larger section of the society, and in doing so, "you have to accept the challenges that are sure to come by.
"When the going gets tough, the tough gets going which I feel is best suited for journalists of our state. Journalists, like soldiers, are and must be tough. Tough times should always toughen you more," he said.
Despite various hurdles, the media in the state had never ceased to grow, he said.
The chief minister appealed to journalists not to adhere to spread inaccurate information.
"As you are the eyes and ears of the government, I look forward to your constructive criticisms, suggestions and solutions so that my commitment to deliver a common man's government is fulfilled," he added.
