Microblogging platform Twitter today said it has launched Twitter 'Lite' app, which occupies less space on phone and consumes lesser data, for Android users in India.
"Twitter Lite minimises data usage, loads quickly on slower networks and takes up less space on your device. Last year, Twitter introduced Twitter Lite as a mobile web browser experience available on mobile.twitter.com and is expanding the solution to the Google Play store today," Twitter said in a statement.
Other Internet companies that offer similar lighter apps include Facebook, Ola and LinkedIn.
This is an expansion of the data-friendly ways through which people can access and share content on Twitter, a Twitter spokesperson said.
The company has also introduced new features such as push notifications, bookmarks, night mode, and threads that were not available previously, the spokesperson said.
"Twitter is committed to adding value to the expression of our users, allowing them to share their experiences and views in a more meaningful and engaging manner," Mahima Kaul, Head of Public Policy at Twitter India, said.
Twitter had about 335 million monthly active users globally at the end of June 2018. While the company does not give out country-specific numbers, it has previously stated that India is among its top audience markets globally.
