Two alert Railway patrolmen were today rewarded for exemplary performance of duty due to which a major tragedy was averted in Sonepur Railway division when two stone slabs, "deliberately" put on tracks were removed in time.

East Central Railway zone General Manager D K Gayen bestowed Rs 5,000 cash award and a citation to each of the two patrolmen---Ramesh Prajapati and Manzoor Alam--at a function at ECR headquarter at Hajipur, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Arvind Kumar Rajak said in a statement.

The GM had announced the reward yesterday.

The two patrolmen had found two stone slabs "deliberately" placed on track to cause mishap in between Sathajagat and Dalsinghsarai under Sonepur division in the wee hours of yesterday.

When they approached near the slabs, four men lurking in the darkness tried to shoo them away.

The two then rushed to Dalsingsarai station and returned with a posse of RPF, GRP and engineers to the spot after which the slabs were removed and the track was declared fit for running of trains.

Due to them, a major accident of Muzaffarpur-Bhagalpur Intercity which was to pass through the spot was averted.

The incident came close on the heels of the derailmen of the Hirakhand Express that left 39 persons dead.

Gayen had said yesterday that in view of spurt in train mishaps in which sabotage has been suspected, patrolling of tracks have been increased in the 3008 km line under ECR that comprises Danapur, Mughalsarai, Sonepur, Dhanbad and Samastipur divisions.
