Two arrested for looting gold, silver in UP's Rampur

Two people have been arrested for allegedly looting gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 24 lakh from jewellers here after an encounter last week, the police said today.

Babu Khan and Abid were arrested on Friday night after an encounter in which eight policemen and the accused were injured, Rampur Superintendent of Police (SP) Vipin Tada said here.

They were produced before a court on Saturday, which sent them to jail, Tada said, adding that they had looted Rs 24 lakh worth of jewellery in the past 30 days.

The duo used to loot people, particularly jewellers, with the help of their accomplices from Bijnor, Muzaffarnagar and Ghaziabad districts in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
 

After a heist, they used to hide their loot at places in Muzaffarnagar and Delhi. So far, 350 grams of gold and 2 kg of silver have been recovered. Six fire arms have also been seized, the SP said.

The accused along with others started shooting at a police team on Friday when their cars were intercepted here, the officer said.
