Two brothers were shot dead in their house here by a group of armed assailants allegedly over a land dispute, with police today claiming to have arrested seven persons in this connection.

A group of armed assailants entered the house of Naresh and Makkan on the intervening night of August 19 and 20 and opened fire at them during which their mother, Hanso Devi, sustained bullet injuries, said SP (Rural) Ashfaq Ahmed.

Devi is undergoing treatment at a local hospital here, Ahmed said, adding Devi's third son Radhe Shyam and the deceased's wives were not present in the house when the incident took place.

The brothers were allegedly involved in a dispute with some villagers over a lane that passed through two land holdings owned by the family.

The matter was scheduled to be heard by the village panchayat on August 20, the day the murders took place.

"An FIR has been registered on the complaint filed by the deceased's family. Seven persons have been arrested, while search is on for three others booked in the case," a police official said.

The questioning of the seven arrested is in progress, he added.
