The police crime branch arrested two cheats here today, who had allegedly taken thousands of rupees from poor rural youth promising them falsely that they would be selected for the T-20 World Cup under-19 cricket team.
Police inspector Avinash Aghav of the city crime branch said that under the banner of an unregistered association, advocate Sanjay Dongre, Pawan Sultane, Sudhir Jadhav and Pramod Ughde, asked the youth to take part in selection tests for the U-19 T20 world cup squad.
They conducted "selection tests" for the youth at BAM University grounds.
The youth were later told that they have been "selected" and sent to Nepal where they "practiced" for few days.
The accused allegedly took Rs 80,000 from a youth called Rajwardhan Sonkamble after telling him that he would have to go to Sri Lanka.
Sonkamble gave them the money which he had saved for his father's treatment.
After Sonkamble realised that he had been cheated, he asked the accused to return the money but they ignored him.
Meanwhile, Rajwardhan's father passed away after he could not get medical treatment for want of money.
Rajwardhan met Commissioner of Police Rajendra Singh and filed a complaint based on which a team lead by DCP Sandeep Aatole, ACP Babarao Musale, police inspector Avinash Aghav arrested Sultane and Ughde, while the rest are absconding.
A case had neen registered by the Osmanpura police which said that the gang had duped many youth.
