Two police constables were today injured when conmen hurled stones at them and an exchange of fire ensued between them in the jungle of Gadhi village, some 60 km from here.

Two conmen were arrested while six others managed to escape, Gairatganj tehsil Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Mangal Singh Thackery told PTI.

He said police got information that a gang allegedly involved in duping farmers by selling fake gold was camping in the jungle of Gadhi since last couple of days.

The police swung into action and reached the spot. On seeing policemen, conmen pelted stones at them, leaving constables Mahendra Singh and Jitendra Singh injured, the SDOP said.

When police drew close to them, they fired some 12- 13 rounds. Police in defence fired some seven rounds, Thackery added.

"We arrested Rizwan Khan and Rashid Khan, hailing from Vidisha district but six others managed to flee," the SDOP said.

A manhunt has been launched to arrest the remaining accused and recover firearms from them, he added.

"We have recovered three motorbikes of the accused from the jungle," he said

A case has been registered and further investigations are on, the official added.
