With an MLA sitting on a fast unto death demanding action against two police constables, both were suspended today on charges of thrashing a taxi driver for a minor offence.

Sonu Singh and Sachin Kumar have been suspended after they were found guilty of "severely beating up" the driver for a minor offence, Pauri SP Vimala Gunjyal said.

Lansdowne MLA Dilip Mahant had begun a fast unto death before Pauri SP's office yesterday demanding an early action against the cops named in the FIR lodged in connection with the incident which happened on August 18.

Bhagwan Singh, the taxi driver, was allegedly beaten up by some police constables who said he had ignored their signal near Dugadda police check post to stop.

The driver's argument, supported by the passengers he was carrying, was that he did not stop his vehicle as he could not see the signal.

An FIR was lodged against the cops on the insistance of locals and journalists.
