Two debt-ridden farmers commit suicide in Mandya district

Amid rising incidents of farmers' suicides in recent weeks, two more debt-ridden farmers allegedly committed suicide in Mandya district today.

Eleven farmers have allegedly committed suicide in the last 22 days, including two of them today, in the sugarcane belt of Mandya district in Karnataka where the cane growers are in distress with mills not paying their dues and not crushing the cane.

The deceased have been identified as Ramakrishna of Ipanahalli and Chinnaswamy of Kempina koppalu village, police said.

Ramakrishna, 40, hanged himself from the ceiling fan and 48-year-old Chinnaswamy consumed poison, they said.

Ramakrishna had borrowed Rs four lakh from banks and private firms and Chinnaswamy Rs 3.5 lakh from private money lenders, police said.
