Two elderly women in Baswapur village

Two elderly women from Baswapur village in Aheri taluka died after consuming allegedly poisonous liquor on March 7, police sources said here today.

They have been identified as Bhimakka Bodha Shidam (85) and Kishtabai Pardeshi Madavi (65).

According to the police, the deceased women consumed locally-brewed liquor probably made out of mahua flowers or gur along with their relatives as a part of their Dhuli Vandan celebrations.

However, the two women died the very next afternoon since as they were not allegedly provided any medical treatment.

Allegedly, the villagers performed their last rites without informing the police, Aheri's Additional Superintendent of Police Rahul Shrirame said.
 

Three other people from the same village, identified as Bodha Shidam (90), Rangayya Sadmek (62) and Ramayya Talandi (55), whose health had deteriorated due to liqour consumption were admitted to the Aheri Rural Hospital and they are now out of danger, Shrirame said.

So far, no offence has been registered against anybody and the police has begun investigating, Shrirame said.

It is yet to be ascertained whether the tragedy occurred due to poisonous liquor or due to the container of pesticides they used to store the liquor, he said.

Since there is a ban on liquor in the district, people tend to consume locally brewed liquor in various parts of the district.
