Two female students commit suicide in Odisha

Two female students today allegedly committed suicide by hanging in their respective hostel rooms in the state capital and at Barbil in the tribal dominated Keonjhar district, police said.

In the state capital, a BBA student of a reputed private B-School identified as Taniya Banerjee was found hanging in her hostel room when the hostel superintendent broke open the door of her room, police said.

Taniya was a resident of Talcher area of Odisha. Her parents alleged that their daughter was either killed or forced to commit suicide. The girl's mother alleged that her daughter was tortured by senior students and the hostel authorities.
 

"My daughter called up me last night and narrated how she was mentally tortured by some senior students in the ladies hostel. She was under immense mental stress. However, I consoled her and said to wait till morning," Taniyas mother said.

Principal of DAV School of Business Management (DSBM) Dwarika Nath Mishra, however, denied the allegations and claimed that the deceased was mentally fit till last night.

A report from Keonjhar district said a third year student of government-run Industrial Training Institute (ITI) of Barbil allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room.

The student was identified as Sridev Mahakud, the report added.
