Two get life sentence for killing labourer

A court here today sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a 35-year-old labourer last year.

Additional sessions Judge Mridula V Bhatia sentenced Vicky Thakur (22) and Gopal Giri (37), both residents of Bhiwandi, to life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.

They were asked to pay a compensation of Rs 25,000 to the wife of the deceased.

Additional Public Prosecutor Buleshwar Hinge told the court that on May 13 last year policemen found a body in a pool of blood along a road in Bhiwandi's Goregaon area.

A 15kg stone was found near the body with blood stains all over it, prosecutor said.
 

According to the prosecution, Shravan Gupta, 35, and both the two accused had gone to the site for booze where a quarrel broke out between them and the accused stoned Gupta to death.

The entire case was based on circumstantial evidence and the prosecution examined 15 witnesses.

The court relied on the evidence presented before it and held that the prosecution successfully proved the case beyond any reasonable doubt and convicted the duo.
